Last month (April) we documented the advances that have been made in dragging back ups into the 21 century. We outlined portable hard drives as being the way forward and urged you to watch this space for some up to the minute information in how even these drives are improving in quality all the time.
Technology is moving fast in this area. The first generation of drives backed up at 480 mega bits per second, the next generation drives backed up at 150 mega bytes per second. The next after that backed up at 300 mega bytes per second. It's anticipated by the end of the year it'll be 600 mega bytes a second. That's really fast.
So, good news - back up's are becoming very fast indeed.
Capacity wise, they are also increasing. At the moment portable drives on the market offer 250 giga bytes as standard and 500 giga bytes are out there. That's a lot of information that can be stored - most SME's have 100 gig at present.
It's not a fad though - they are here to stay; they are just getting smaller in size (you can get 8gig just on a keyring stick that fits in your pocket), but bigger in terms of what they can store and how fast they can store it.
Sounds like a dream come true in terms of reliably storing your business data...and it is... BUT it also means that what with the drives being so small, so portable and so quick, someone could just walk into your office, download your entire business and walk out of the door.
So, next month - we'll be looking at the security implications of keeping your business your business. | |
