It seemed such a good idea at the time. Mr ...well - we'll call him Mr X to prevent his embarrassment - had some documents to print off that he wanted to post to a client. He sent them to print, waited, and...nothing happened. So he sent it again. Again nothing happened.
So he turned the printer on and off. Then he tried re starting the computer. Having no joy there either he set about attacking the printer itself. It had a light on, so the power was connected...but that sign of life only annoyed Mr X - it was on...but refusing to play ball! He indignantly pulled the paper tray out...there was plenty of paper...he yanked the lid open...there was no jam, plenty of ink, but no document. Nothing.
So he went back to the computer. He decided to check that it was sending the documents to the printer...but there they were, sitting in a queue, just waiting. And that's when Mr X decided to become private investigator number one. He began to access his settings and preferences...he delved into the hardrive looking for something that looked like it might provide him a clue to the case of the missing printer. Along the way he changed a setting here and there. The computer asked him if he was sure he wanted to delete this folder...he wasn't sure what folder it was, but he decided to delete it anyway. Maybe the folder had been what was blocking his document printing. But it didn't seem to help.
Finally, he gave up and called a IT company. He didn't want to admit that he'd been fiddling with the settings so he just said he hadn't touched anything, but it wouldn't print. After a while, he confessed that in fact he might have made a few adjustments here and there. Eventually it was all sorted out.
The silly thing is, if Mr X had just told us what he'd done, we wouldn't have minded. After all - it's his computer, he could do whatever he wanted with it. But it could have been resolved very, very quickly and very cheaply indeed. You can tell us anything, we're not here to judge. Just to help.
