It's not only going smoke free on 1st July that is going to make your office a cleaner and greener place. The Government Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive also finishes it's introductory roll out stage at the end of June.
The directive has one simple aim - to stop WEEE winding up as landfill by encouraging businesses to recycle and dispose of electronic equipment lawfully. Anyone about to throw out an old PC, or sell it on needs to check out www.environment-agency.gov.uk before doing anything, to make sure they are compliant.
But it's not just the WEEE directive that will help your business become more environmentally friendly. There are lots of other ways to reduce a company's impact on the earth's resources.
Email is great - it cuts down the need to cut down trees, but are your colleagues unnecessarily printing off emails or files? Statistics suggest a typical office document is printed some ten times...Rather than storing hard copies, how about storing electronically? As long as you have a good backup system in place, there's no need to worry about losing the files.
When it comes to buying new office equipment, make sure you choose energy efficient models -it keeps the overheads down too as they use less energy.
It's also possible to get your existing systems to work more efficiently. Shutting down PCs, printers, photocopiers when they are not being used saves a massive amount of energy - as does not leaving anything on standby overnight. Even having an office at all is arguably something we could all do without. It would save the carbon emissions from the commute...flexible working means we could all work at home...
Ok, so maybe that's a step too far for some, but there's certainly something we can all do to stop our workplace leaving a nasty mark on the planet. | |
