Minding your own business...
When we think of office break-ins, we tend to think in very literal terms - smashed windows, scattered files and pc's ripped out of their stations...but today's thieves are much more subtle. They don't need a dramatic exit, you won't even know that they've been and gone; but their actions will be just as devastating to your business.

If you leave the wrong person alone in your office for just a few minutes, they can plug a portable USB drive into your system, download every confidential bit of business information you have and be out of the door leaving you none the wiser - the technical term for this kind of theft is i-plundering. The USB drives are small enough to fit on a keyring, so it's not going to be obvious what they are up to.

Equally, if you've got an employee who might be on the move to another company, or might be thinking about setting up their own business, do you really want them to be able to download your hard earned client's contact details from under your nose, before walking straight out the door?

At tlp we've been researching software that blocks storage devices when they are plugged into the USB port, meaning that business sensitive information can't be downloaded. Simply put, it's possible to give full access to sockets for say, the system administrator only, then read only rights to system users meaning they would be able to plug a mouse into their computer (because you can't store anything on a mouse) but nothing else.

If you'd like more information about blocking i-plunderers, contact us.
