| The virtual barriers are coming down | |

More and more of our time seems to be taking on a virtual slant. The popularity of networking sites like Facebook and virtual worlds like Entropia are testament to the numbers of users who prefer relaxing in virtual rather than real life. Up until now, they have mostly been used for socialising, but a new website has launched that may offer businesses an e-commerce platform in their own virtual world.
Metaplace works by allowing anyone to create a virtual world without needing a degree in computer speak. It's completely web based, unlike other virtual worlds that require a user to download specialist software. Anyone wanting their own virtual world effectively creates their own page within the website. Worlds can be linked to one another, there are templates for shops, games - users can even clone other worlds and they can run on anything from a mobile phone to a PC.
While it sounds like a marketing opportunity made in heaven (or a virtual version at least), could this be one step too far for customers who are now feeling increasingly removed from real people, operating in real businesses? In an age of call centres, voice activated menu options and companies that only offer customer support on line, you might find it refreshing to know that if you call us at TLP, an actual person will answer the phone. We don't have a call centre and should you decide to want us to do some IT work for you, we can offer you your own dedicated engineer, who will make it their business to understand your business. An old fashioned approach with bang up to date technology. The best - some might say - of both worlds...
